Upcoming Canyoneering Night

Every child deserves to feel safe, secure, and cared for at school. That’s why in Canyons District, safety measures are focused not just on outfitting facilities with modern security features but also on building confident learners.

Canyons invites families to become familiar with our safety protocols at the next Canyoneering Academy Parent Information Night. Sponsored as part of an ongoing lecture series, the event is free, open to the public, and scheduled for Thursday, April 20, 6-8:30 p.m. at Butler Middle School, 7530 S. 2700 East in Cottonwood Heights.

At the event, families will have their choice of participating in three of six workshops covering a variety of topics, from digital safety and suicide prevention to the parent notification apps Canyons uses to keep families informed.

Administrators and law enforcement officials will talk about such safety measures as security cameras, emergency preparedness drills that schools practice throughout the year, and vestibules that require visitors to check-in at the Main Office before entering schools. They’ll also discuss less visible measures, including the Internet filters schools use to safeguard students from accessing inappropriate online content and the consistent rules and expectations that are enforced to keep classrooms free from bullying, harassment and discrimination.

“Canyons District is building safe schools from the inside out,” said digital teaching and learning specialist Katie Gebhardt who is hosting a workshop on dealing with digital drama. “We’ll talk about how drama can escalate online and share tips and tools to help older kids and teens avoid and de-escalate harmful online behavior.”

Attendees will learn about the SafeUT app that parents and students can use to confidentially report anything that makes them feel unsafe. This is one of several two-way communication tools the District uses to leverage the eyes and ears of the community to maintain secure, welcoming, and high-performing schools.

Canyons Board of Education members will host a workshop to explain their role as elected officials in governing the District and charting the course for future planning and improvement. There will also be a workshop spotlighting CSD’s new full-day kindergarten programs.
