Digital Citizenship:

Each month our digital citizenship coordinator, Sara Lee, teaches our students positive ways to access digital content.  A monthly focus is shared with our teachers and families. Here is the message from last month and this month…

How much screen time is too much? Not all screen time is created equal. There’s a big difference between an hour spent playing video games and an hour spent learning vocabulary from a smartphone app or composing music online. That’s not to say that everything has to be stamped “educational” to provide an enriching experience. With any screen media you choose for your kids — movies, games, TV shows, and apps — you want to look for how it engages your child (Links to an external site.). And, although there’s nothing wrong with a little mindless entertainment, you can maximize your kid’s screen time if you consider the “four C’s”: Connection, Critical Thinking, Creativity, & Context. Visit Canyons School District’s “Digital Wellness (Links to an external site.)” page to learn more.

This month, Canyons School District will be celebrating Digital Citizenship Week on October 18-22, 2021! During this week, students of all ages will be participating in activities that will empower them to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in our digital world. From cyberbullying and photo sharing to digital footprints and online safety, CSD wants to help students address important topics and have meaningful conversations about making great choices in their digital lives.

School Community Council (SCC):

Our SCC meets once a month.  All stakeholders can attend meetings.  Everyone can find SCC information and access meeting minutes on our school website (sprucewood.canyonsdistrict.org> community> school community council).  Last month the committee received a report on how the 2020 budget was spent.

2020 LANDtrust budget received $52,692:

$34,970.75= salaries for Tier II reading aides

         $10,632.00= technology (chromebooks)

         $1,710.25= textbooks

$5,379.00= rollover to this year’s budget (however, this amount is already allocated to pay for phonics readers we ordered in April, but were on backorder until this month due to COVID shipping delays)

2020 TSSA budget received $57,044:

$54,284.16= technology (chromebooks and ipads to get our building 1:1)

$2,759.84= rollover to this year’s budget

Important Dates:

October 8: Picture Day

October 14-15: Fall Break

October 18-22: Digital Citizenship Week

October 25-29: Red Ribbon Week
